Web directories used to be a unique source of quality web sites, one-way back links and a potential traffic provider for everyone looking to place links or find out more about a given subject. Not long ago, when search engines used to give credibility to links in web directories and the links coming out of web directories, these finer points might be overlooked in favor of common web directory link building practices.
But now that many web directory owners insists on two way links to subjects not strictly pertaining to the originating website, webmasters must analyze how much a given website of web directory can really assist a search engine result.
The demand for exchange links and the willingness of some webmasters to accept less than ideal links in return for fees may lessen the overall suitability of a formerly valuable web directory site and a viable, content value building link. Thus do really value-building links get displaced in favor of paid links with actual detraction value to the web directory as a whole. Link value assessment and web directory link placement technique suffers.
Web directory webmasters may wake to find their web directory site has been spammed all over the internet and more. Webmasters of web directories wonder how they can remain competitive and provide quality links when almost anyone has been able to establish a web directory in just a few hours or overnight, causing a dramatic increase in link farm web directories and a decrease in the integrity of quality web link directories. This will fall in response due to the loss of the credibility the search engines used to give to the newly established web directories.
